Reader Testimonial:
The Tick Slayer is the go-to guide for anyone battling Lyme disease. It's filled with inspiration and the perspiration of how to overcome what other's have said can't be undone. A powerful book!
Book is GREAT....so inspiring to see someone who "never gives up" when they have Lyme Disease.
Got your book in hand, read once all the way through, and on my second read.
The book is top notch.... Love it
I love the book so far…so much of it is like reading about myself. Very encouraging and empowering!” THANK YOU!!!
I found the book very interesting; you did a great job. Such determination in searching out treatments that were effective and then writing the case history. Excellant!
...well written, knowledgable and funny.
This is the most inspiring book I have ever read....It''s great to hear all the pieces of the puzzle being put together so that I can see how Perry got her life back. Thanks a lot Perry!

Psycho-Cybernetics – Whoa! Seriously Good Read For Everyone, In Any Stage of Their Recovery or Life.

May 11, 2012
I venture into just about every book store I can. One of the best bookstores around here is a used bookstore (more like a warehouse). I went in to just browse and ended up playing with the bookstore cats, Bookmark and Twain, and picking up the original copy of Psycho-Cybernetics by Maxwell Maltz (so old it was a dollar back in the day). Even though the pages were yellow I knew I had struck gold. I had heard people before talk about the book, but never read it. Shame on me. Seriously, that was my invitation to get it years ago and didn’t.

Dr. Maltz was a plastic surgeon and humbly says he’s just letting you know about cybernetics and he didn’t create it.

For those who HAVEN’T read the book ALREADY!…

Cybernetics is about changing your mindset to get everything you want and it’s very interesting. It’s about “thinking, imagining, remembering and acting in order to develop an adequate and realistic self-image and use your creative mechanism to bring success and achieving particular goals.”

 Here are the points….

-The human nervous system cannot tell the difference between an actual experience and an imagined experience (in vivid detail of course).

What’s interesting about this point is that he gives example after example of people (and even athletes) who go over in their mind an event they want to happen and that they can actually train their nervous system to retain this as a memory. Once you have memories of events (fact or fiction) you can “dwell” on them causing even better experiences to come your way or just creating the even to come about. I’ve done this, so I am already aware of it working.

-Self-image is part of the key to creating what you want in your future. Some people want this or that, but do not have the correct self-image to obtain the goal in the end. He says you must find yourself acceptable to you.

There is obviously a lot more detail to go into about this issue. How many people do you know who are sick who play the part well? You can’t play sick and expect to get out of sickness. For example, you have to constantly think about yourself (self-image) as a vibrant, thriving person throughout the highs and lows of recovery.

-Do not be afraid to make mistakes, because nobody is going to get it right the first time around. For every success, there are tons of failures that occur first. By failing and not dwelling on it as a negative thing, but by focusing on it as something that can be used to make changes to future actions, you are creating the course to the ultimate goal you want. He goes on to say that mistakes are necessary steps. “They were meant to be means to an end- and not an end in themselves,” after they serve their purpose, they should be forgotten.

I hear a lot of people saying that this or that failed them, so they are not willing to try something new. These people will NEVER heal, from anything. They have made their minds up.

-Do not “jam” your creative mechanism because being too worried about something causes the opposite to work. Great ideas don’t come to people who are pressed for the idea. That’s why “sleeping on it” works. He goes on to list many people who have made huge contributions to society (like inventors) who mentioned how they came about an idea…..get this, it was always when they were RELAXED and not worried and often doing something that had nothing to do with the problem they were trying to solve.

A few good quotes to take from the book:

“A human being always acts and feels and performs in accordance with what he imagines to be true about himself and his environment.” “Your nervous system reacts appropriately to what “you” think or imagine to be true.”

“When you do see a thing clearly in your mind, your creative “success mechanism” within you takes over and does the job much better than you could do it by conscious effort or “will power.”

….this is something I’m really working hard at, which is trusting myself to find the answers. I know I can “muscle it” in a race, but why not just relax and run faster? World Records are won by people running relaxed. It’s difficult to do, but something I am learning to do. See, I’m not perfect either!

“You may have never been formally hypnotized. But if you have accepted an idea- from yourself, your teachers, your parents, friends, advertisements……if you are firmly convinced that idea is true, it has the same power over you as a hypnotists’ words have over a hypnotized subject.”

“Our current beliefs, whether good or bad, were formed without effort, with no sense of strain, and without the exercise of “will power.”……..It follows that we must employ the same process in forming new beliefs, or new habits, that is, in a relaxed condition.”

Sleep Tight With Celestite?

….now for my slightly “New Age” rant……

For some of us, we understand that all gemstones, minerals, crystals (everything on this planet) carry very specific frequencies that make them unique. Amethyst is known as the “healing gemstone.”

It has such a strong affect on many that it was included into a Far Infrared Mat- called the Biomat Amthyest (I’ll save that for another newsletter, it’s amazing). A few weekends ago I was out and about with my main squeeze browsing a rock shop ( If I can’t find and dig it up, I buy it). I was slightly obsessing about how beautiful celestite was with it’s blue crystals. I got home and got a surprise, the rock I wanted was bought for me and that night I was reading about celestite’s properties. The book mentioned putting the rock beside my bed to induce dreaming and creating a calm environment. I’m usually a really lucid dreamer, but the past few months (due to stress I’m sure) I stopped dreaming. That very night I was dreaming and have been since I put the rock by my bed. Coincidence?

Well, everyone who has slept by that rock has purported dreaming, even people who say they don’t dream or can’t remember themselves dreaming if they do!  So far, it’s worked so well, that I really want a giant wall of it, right behind my bed. I’ll have to write “Santa” for it

Madaddy

May 10, 2012

Madaddy is the name we called my grandfather, it’s short for “My Daddy,” since he was like a father to everyone.

He died last week at the age of 100.  My grandmother died a few years before him and deep inside I think he’s been very sad for a long time and was probably just “ready to go.”  He passed away in his sleep.

Madaddy is mentioned in my book because he is a well known doctor, played a role in how I view medicine and he would always leacture me about the Hippocratic Oath that doctors use to take, which means “first do no harm.” He would always tell people that “Perry should of been a doctor,” but would also say that he “wouldn’t want to practice medicine the way it is today.”  My name Perry, my mother’s maiden name and my grandfather’s last name.

He will be greatly missed. Not just by me, but by many.  I’m happy that he got to read my book before he went. He really liked it.

Something New I Learned This Week…..”Community Acpuncture” is Very Afforadable!

March 27, 2012

I am big proponent of acupuncture. It’s seen by many conventional doctors as this poo-poo type treatment with no substantial evidence that it works. I write in my book about my experiences with a Chinese Medical Doc and the use of acupuncture (specifically to release a lot of toxic emotions I used to have…mostly anger, which is EXTREMELY TOXIC.) My case is pretty amazing and what I write in the book will probably shock the hell out of many people, but yet it’s very telling of the situation I was in and the situation that many sick people are in.

For a month now I’ve been thinking about getting it done again, mostly due to shin pain because of training in spikes so often has put a strain on my lower legs. I’ve tried many treatments and the issue never got better, but never got worse, probably due to all the treatments.

On a whim I picked a local acupuncturist and made an appointment. This new type is called “community acupuncture” which is actually more affordable because you are in a group setting, sitting among others with needles in who are usually sleeping or resting in recliners.

The difference is that besides sitting with other people in a room (just like you do with an IV), you are fully clothed, so needles are inserted in feet, hands, head, and from the elbow down or knee down and I would say it’s still very effective or perhaps just as effective in many cases as a one on one. Plus, you can’t beat the price. Sometimes it’s 1/5th of the cost of the one on one method.

After one treatment (yes, seriously, one treatment), my shins were 90% better. I was a little shocked because I wasn’t expecting the pain to get better so quickly, but I knew that I was doing the right thing as all the points where the acupuncturist was inserting needles felt like fire shooting out. This basically means she was hitting the right spots!

So for people who are working on their health, as an ongoing thing,

including those who are chronically ill who need that ongoing support during their recovery, I highly recommend checking out a community acupuncturist and giving it a whirl. They can help with many ailments. Don’t expect miracles (like my shin pain going away instantaneously), but you can expect some very positive results in different areas.

Keeping healthy is a lifelong process….

I hear a lot of people who are suffering from chronic illness complain about how many things they take, how many treatments they have to get, and how they are tired of the “full time job” of working toward their recovery.Ceramics Keep Me Sane and Healthy!

Well, it can be time consuming for sure. On the other hand, when you are finally working on yourself and most people who are chronically ill cannot say that they were really working on their health prior to the illness, I would say it’s a very positive thing.

Because what you do now can form healthy habits which keep you healthy for a lifetime. Eventually anyone who does not spend time making themselves stay healthy is going to break down. What you learn now can help you in the long run.

It has for me.

I’m at the age where I’ve noticed my friends beginning to show signs of age and for many of them the aging process has not been kind. Those who do not have Lyme or had Lyme or any chronic illness surely will get something at some point; some sooner than others.

Yes, I’m healthy and fully recovered, but it doesn’t keep me from continuing what I do to stay healthy! That would be quite foolish. After all, I remember vividly the type of pain I used to be in and I just cannot allow myself to go back to that kind of life.

Blood Test

March 19, 2012

I recently had the first blood test done in over three years. Normally, I wouldn’t go so long, but I really felt so good, I decided not too. But just to play it safe since I’ve been training so hard, I decided to get a standard CBC. Looking GOOD! In fact, this is probably the best blood test I’ve had. My Ferritin, although it looks low, is actually quite high for me. I’ve had it around 3-8 before. That’s a real problem. Overall, I’m VERY PLEASED!

I do a better job in the book explaining “bad blood” and what it looks like. My CBC has obviously changed a lot since I was sick. That’s a good thing.

Ozone Machine

March 17, 2012

***Forum should be up by next week- I’ll send an update via email if you get The Tick Slayer newsletter!

Kittens-OZONE*** Just got an email from my mother today about using her ozone machine. She had a stray cat that had babies (6 of them) as soon as she got her inside. Some had conjunctivitus. The vet said to use over the counter saline solution to get the gunk out. Then use opthalmic drops (if anyone is familiar with these, animals HATE having these thick drops put in their eyes!). Instead she cleaned them out with ozonated water and a soft cloth. It worked great!

She says, “Vets should have these machines running in their offices.”

Facing Fears and Self-Doubt

I had an inkling to write this all of a sudden. That’s how I write things. I just wait until I have something good to say that I feel is important.

Lyme disease and RunningIf I listened to half the people I come into contact with, I would never get anywhere! I’m sure of it. Just recently I’ve had to deal with people’s worries for ME! People worry that I shouldn’t of become a sprinter and that it would be too difficult to get my body to change, to difficult to make the Olympic team, too difficult in general. These are other people’s worries now. People worry so much about EVERYTHING that they even worry about silly stuff when it comes to other people’s life choices. I have to admit just recently I worried for my sister, who just married a guy I don’t know that well (only met him once). I worried about what people would think of me (for a few days) when this book came out. The fact that people would know all these truths about me, kind of made me sick in my stomach a little. That’s how fast worry can grow!

If I worried about everything that one could worry about, because you can either worry about situations or just go with the flow, I would probably be really sick.

Sometimes I have to remind myself (bring myself back from that silly worry stuff), that everything is JUST A STORY. No real right and wrong, just choices and consequences. What you really have to pay attention to WHOM you come into contact with, because there are no accidents in this life. You meet people for a reason.

Going back to people’s worries for me. I say don’t worry about what I’m trying to accomplish, just wish me well. I’m not scared to fail. I failed many times before and had some brilliant success BECAUSE I kept going, doing what I felt compelled to do.

Just like with ones recovery, you cannot fear the failure. You have to be delighted with the OPTION for a full recovery. If you want it badly enough, you wish for it, you will get it.

Just like with what I’m doing. To some, I’m doing the impossible. To me, I’m doing what I felt guided to do, not just with the book, but with my athletics. If this is what I truly want, I will get it at some point. Will it be this year? I can only hope so. But will I be completely crushed from trying and failing? No way. That’s how deeply I believe in what I’m doing. I know inside that it will come to me when the time is right. All I can do is move forward and enjoy the journey. The journey is what the lesson is all about. It’s what helps your soul grow.

I’ve already implemented the change in my sport, just like I did when I decided to recover fully and started finding my answers.

Be patient and don’t fear the unknown. There is nothing to fear or to doubt. You must make the decision and then move forward on your course.

Spring

March 13, 2012

Spring has sprung in the mountains. The book is out and people are finally reading through it! I’ve had some great feedback so far. I’m not sure why I was doubting it, but it’s nice to hear what people think for sure.

Review books have been sent also, so I await the response from those also. In the meantime, it’s back to training hard. I have about 8 weeks to get it all together. I must race and make an Olympic A standard before the Trials at the end of June. So the pressure is on.

Right now, I’m just enjoying the fact the book is out and people can finally use that information. I imagine for many, it will be a real eye opener. I hope it helps a lot of people get healthy.

If you have read the book, please make sure you leave me official feedback here! THANK YOU!

So, it’s finally time! It’s a huge relief to let the book go to print.

February 27, 2012

A lot of hard work has gone into it and I’ve met some really great people who helped me see this project through! That’s one of the best things that’s happen to me with writing this book, is the people I’ve met.

Originally, I had written around 500+ pages, but after a year+ of editing, I had to chop a lot out to make the story flow more and to “get to the point quicker.” I hated getting rid of some of the good stories in there (because I thought it added really good entertainment value)! Again, I had to focus on why I was writing this in the first place. The answer was: to provide an inspirational story that gives people answers and helps them with their own recovery. So I believe I did that.

A last minute decision was to go around some copyright issues. I had many photos of me racing, but I didn’t own the rights to them. I also was toying around with the idea of adding a bunch of pictures in the middle of the book. I thought pictures in the middle would distract the reader, so I axed that idea. Instead, I drew around 80 pictures based on real life photos (yep, art school comes in handy every now and then). Hope you like them!

Perry Fields

I may be making small edits or big edits to the book in the future, but at some point, you have to say good is good enough! That’s what I’m doing right now.

If you do like the book, one of the best compliments is to leave me feedback and tell me why. It will help me with future edits of this book, because I hope this is a book that reaches a lot of people who need it.

The other best compliment is sharing the book with friends and family…or just anyone you know is sick and could use the information and the story.
